THE ISSUE OF STARTING OVER:
The idea of starting afresh is a pretty old one so it's no wonder Mitchell thought of it when giving GWTW her own brand of copyrights.The result is a hopeless , dejected Rhett, proclaiming his inability to clean the slate (which by the way is done so efficiently that it makes ME weary)since he's past middle-aged and can't wait anymore for Scarlett to grow up.
LOVE WEARS OUT:
One thing's for sure.Rhett does indeed not give a damn.It's no farce for those who may want to delude themselves as most authors do.He will need to start over in any new book and a Rhett who doesn't care is...............scary cause he can be so heartless and unkind to those he doesn't give a farthing for.
UNCHANGEABLE SCARLETT:
It is remorseful that even after Scarlett realizes her true feelings for Rhett,she doesn't fully acknowledge anything other than that.Not the fact that Rhett is completely disenchanted or the reasons for it.In short while everything around her has changed ,her own passive mind remains as charmingly ignorant as ever.
Rhett himself hints that Scarlett will always be attracted by the glitter not the gold (she's not leaving her carpet-begger friends any time soon)indicating that it's really difficult for her to cast aside her mould.
THERE! ANOTHER DOOR CLOSED>
SCARLETT -THE STALKER:
Anything that Scarlett got from her infatuation with Ashley Wilkes was because she had him in her iron grip ,fettered to herself by the manacles of Ashley's own helplessness and his debts to her.
Unfortunately Rhett is completely aware of this tacticof keeping near and chipping away-at-the-armour and as he says he'll not let that happen.SO THERE>
and the best of all:
THE MENDED AND THE WHOLE:
No matter what in the future,the past remains unalterable.A past of cruelty on both their parts,harshness,hard words,judgemental errors and wounds that go deep and that will not be entirely forgotten or removed.Anything to come will be a glued together,mended artifact of what was.
The only feasible option seems to be a, well ,I guess we could borrow something from "Scarlett".Kat was a nice idea but after the prison debacle, he's bound to catch her in the middle of it :p
